I take photographs of Tokyo townscape from emergency staircase of multi-tenant buildings and of apartment houses. Most of staircases are facing back streets, and it is interesting that the other side of Tokyo appears there. Townscape in the twilight looked from staircases, to which no one reaches as if it has slipped from everyday life, has so erotic appeal that I am fascinated by townscapes every time when I take photographs. I become aware that I do not know anything about the town in fact, although I always look at Tokyo townscape.

The current stock market is the very reason you should never invest money you could potentially need in the next 3-5 years. I suspect it will take at least 3 years from now for the market to regain it's Oct '07 highs.
That said, even as my portfolio bleeds to the tune of 20%+ losses (it's well into a 5-figure loss at this point without even tallying my 401k) I still find myself grinning. I can't help it.
This could easily turn out to be a worse downturn than the tech crash + attacks of 2001. And it hurts to lose money. I get that. But unless you were on the verge of retirement, bear markets like these are the best possible thing to happen to you. Even in the unlikely event of 70s-style stagflation or 30s-style depression, if your horizon is 10+ years investing will turn copper into gold.
This isn't faith I have. It's history. It's an economy that has handled two world wars, a global depression, mass inflation, and a long list of other ailments. It will survive this, too.
And if it doesn't? In that case I think we'd all have bigger things to worry about than money.

| Remember that CoD4 server we started a while back? Remember how we tried several days to get people on it? All pub-like.
Yeah, me neither.
Well, in the same way that bean seeds grow into giant white monsters while nobody's watching, our server has sprouted into a veritable beanstalk.

Let's play tonight :) And if any of you have been helping populate it, THANKS!

Make no mistake--I'm bleeding from this crisis. You really don't even want to know how much my portfolio has sunk over the past week. Really, you don't. It's a lot.
I'm young, though, and believe that in the long-term I will be grateful for a time like this. Crisis like these, when stocks are awash with blood, are the absolute best times to buy. That's me, though. I understand not everyone is in that position.
I'm still against the bailout.
This opinion differs from those I consider gurus of finance, and to that end I'll accept I may be technically wrong in my desire to see banks fail. It's quite possible that the bailout plan is the best long-term and financially-sound plan.
I'm still against the bailout.
From an idealistic point of view I cannot accept it. If capitalism must suffer a blow then so be it. If the extent and limits of a free market (in so much as what we had) must change then so be it. If the failure leads to an era of too-broad, over-reaching government oversight then so be it.
I'm still against the bailout.
I can simply not approve of this form of insane socialism. If we were Germany the situation would be different. But we're not. We value open markets. At least we're supposed to.
There's this strange notion our country has in modern times that happiness is a fundamental right. That safety is guaranteed.
It's not.
Capitalism allows one's greed to be limited only by one's ingenuity and government oversight to provide a "fair" playground. It is not insured. It does not protect you from losing everything you have--whether a corporation or an individual.
This is why I cannot accept this bailout. The consequences must balance the risks. I realize those who would suffer the consequences really had no say in the matter or involvement. I realize those who would bear the brunt of the pain would not be those directly responsible.
Still I cannot support it. I might be persuaded it's the best course of action from a rational point of view. From a idealistic point of view, however, it's simply not palpable.
So no, I do not support the bailout. Not unless we choose to move toward a socialistic economic structure nations like Germany employ. I'd be against that, to be honest, but a full-scale restructuring like this would sit better with me than the current bailout plans.

| Trying something a bit different this time. The detail doesn't come out as well, but there's color ^_^ No lines except a really brief sketch on this one. I suck at this method so far, but with practice I'll get better.

| These pictures remind me of my home state. The dry grass near the stream in particular reminds me of my trips to eastern Montana. An amazingly diverse place when it comes to scenery. I prefer the greener areas myself, but i have some fond memories of tromping through the other stuff on various hunts and adventures when i was a kid.
This is my favorite. Rolling, sloped hilly areas, short grass. Great views.
