I really need to remember to work bigger. I should have drew Seth in his own document full-sized (half letter-sized) rather than try to fit his scythe on it.

Yeah, I got really impatient with the shadow shading. Heh.

LiQUiD and I started watching Dennou Coil a couple nights ago. It's pretty interesting so far. The little girl who points at everything, calling it 'poop' cracks me up for some reason.

Anyway, here's a sketch of Daichi. I'm happy with out it came out, considering I spent less time than the Naruto one last night. Below is a screencap since you probably have no idea who this is :P

Yup, blizzard finally announced it. I know this is a little late (it was announced on Saturday) but I just got around to posting about it.

From the information they give you and watching the movies it looks like D3 is going to be an awesome game (It's blizzard....).

One thing I was rather surprised about was how they got the feeling of the original Diablo I and Diablo II into what they showed of Diablo III. This surprised me because most, if not all, of the original Diablo team has left blizzard. I think that that's a great tribute to Blizzard that they could do that.

I'm not too sure I like the witch doctor...

Anyone else have any thoughts, comments, rants?

So LiQUiD and I went to see the new Indiana Jones movie yesterday. I learned a few things:

1) Movie projectors suck worse and worse each year. Theaters are going to have a difficult time maintaining customers if they can't produce an image that looks at least as good as my TV at home.

2) Sunday is apparently the day parents bring their kids to the movies, and

3) Said parents have absolutely no interest in disciplining their kids. They'd rather ignore their screaming and assume nobody else cares, either.

Driving home my mind invariably wandered. First to the unrealistic goal of changing the law to allow me to hit other people's kids for them. It'd do them good. Realizing this was wasted thought I moved on to a more important one.

The PG-13 rating.

What the hell is a PG-13 rating? Who determined these guidelines?

The new Indiana Jones was a good movie. OK, it had more fan service than an anime about a harem of murderous lolis constantly getting raped by tentacle monsters--but it was still a good movie. The PG-13 rating, however, seemed completely arbitrary and made some sequences incredibly stupid. Maybe they were going for a PG rating? Who knows.

Several times Henry gets punched directly in the face. No blood. No bruises. Yes, let's teach our kids that fist fights have absolutely no repercussions at all. Good idea. In other parts of the movie men get completely pummeled repeatedly and brush it off as if it were no worse than a minor tumble. Showing violence without the consequences seems stupid.

There must be some rule about blood. The only red stuff I remember seeing came out of someone's nose. No sex, either, although suggested genital violence is OK? Again without consequences. According to this movie, teenage boys can be beat relentlessly in their crotch and feel less discomfort than stubbing their toe.

So maybe pain is out of the question? I don't get it. Violence but no consequences. Language filters. Nudity filters of course.

It just seems completely arbitrary. They can't show blood. But a long scene of one of the most disturbing insect-death scenes in recent memory? No problem.

We can't have kids thinking there are consequences for their actions, but giving them nightmares about giant red ants is perfectly OK?

So what's the point of ratings at all if they're nothing more than a completely arbitrary set of rules that have no real relevance? PG-13? I saw mostly adults and children under the age of 9. Maybe a handful (if that) of the younger teens this rating was supposedly designed for. So what's the point?

I'm not saying all movies should be brutal, violent or dirty. Not at all. Kids movies are great. And while I think we "protect" kids far too much with parental censorship and believe they'd be better off exposed to more things, I certainly understand the need for more "kid-appropriate" material.

The rating system as it stands just seems completely broken.

Say what you will about Microsoft and the oft-retarded software they produce. But don't blame it all on one man ;)

Subject: Windows Usability Systematic degradation flame

I am quite disappointed at how Windows Usability has been going backwards and the program management groups don't drive usability issues.

Let me give you my experience from yesterday.

I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ... so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there.

The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up.

This site is so slow it is unusable.

It wasn't in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45.

These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C:\Documents and Settings\billg\My Documents\My Pictures seem clear.

They are not filtered by the system ... and so many of the things are strange.

I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing.

So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist?

So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated.

They told me to go to the main page search button and type movie maker (not moviemaker!).

I tried that. The site was pathetically slow but after 6 seconds of waiting up it came.

I thought for sure now I would see a button to just go do the download.

In fact it is more like a puzzle that you get to solve. It told me to go to Windows Update and do a bunch of incantations.

This struck me as completely odd. Why should I have to go somewhere else and do a scan to download moviemaker?

So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes.

Doesn't Windows update know some key to talk to Windows?

Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff.

This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg.

So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn't use it for anything else during this time.

What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished.

Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night -- why should I reboot at that time?

So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state.

So I got back up and running and went to Windows Update again. I forgot why I was in Windows Update at all since all I wanted was to get Moviemaker.

So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called WindowsXP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP.

What does it mean to have to click on that folder? So I get a bunch of confusing stuff but sure enough one of them is Moviemaker.

So I do the download. The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes. Amazing how slow this thing is.

At some point I get told I need to go get Windows Media Series 9 to download.

So I decide I will go do that. This time I get dialogs saying things like "Open" or "Save". No guidance in the instructions which to do. I have no clue which to do.

The download is fast and the install takes 7 minutes for this thing.

So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there.

It is not there.

What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3.

Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up.

But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information.

What an absolute mess.

Moviemaker is just not there at all.

So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package.

I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself.

I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed.

I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again.

So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package.

The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don't you just love that root certificate message?)

When I really get to use the stuff I am sure I will have more feedback.

The proposed advisory council would examine the potential impact of violent media, make recommendations regarding the ESRB rating system, and establish "a parent-teacher violence awareness program to identify and appropriately assist students who may have a propensity toward violence."
You know, I'm not even going to rant about this based on how stupid it is to blame games for all the world's woes. I'm not even going to rant about the idiocy of singling out "violent" kids or teaching them to suppress their anger.

No, what I'll rant about is the inhuman desire we have as a culture to eradicate violence.

Humans are a violent species. Civilized, maybe--but still violent. We punch each other when we get pissed off. We break things when we get angry. We yell and scream and scratch. Often it's the very act of fighting that brings people closer together.

What would our anti-violence culture have us become? Violent kids are usually violent for an environmental reason. Is psychologically declawing them really the best answer?

Let's assume these people got their way. No more violent games, music or movies. Would our violent nature similarly be vanquished?

I think not.

It would simply be repressed. It would writhe under people's skin until it exploded.

Violence is a part of our nature every bit as much as compassion and empathy are. It should be let out into the open where we can enjoy and understand it. So we can embrace it instead of fear it. So we can use it instead of fear it.

Eliminating violence from mass media will not eliminate violent crime.

First time I saw the guy was when I was a wee young lad watching Bill and Ted's excellent adventure and bogus journey on vhs. Before I realized he was a comedian, he was the guy I enjoyed the most in those movies for his attitude.

Later on in my early years I would rent some of his stand up from west coast video and watch those on vhs as well. Fast forward to the 21st century and I was downloading HBO specials of the guy and laughing my ass off while hearing one of the most accurate and damning depictions of culture, stupidity, religion and government.

Most comedians just do not do it these days. They push no limit and they follow modern day taboos. Carlos Mencia and Dane Cook? AWFUL. Dave Chapelle? Funny guy but has nothing on Carlin.

Carlin will be remembered along the likes of Richard Pryor, Charlie Chaplin,Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks and the other great progressives (not meaning "liberal") evoking change.
