In a world where popularity has no bearing on anything at all, then i agree with your point.
However, you dont say "Microsoft Windows" when you refer to windows, so i think i can safely say Wiki when i refer to the wikipedia, or Coke when i refer to Coca-Cola.
what I interpret when you just say wiki is like the equivilent of saying search engine to refer to google.
Wiki is like the formatting of an encyclopedia, not the encyclopedia its self, or even encyclopedias in general.
Example:
Person A: Do you know where to find information about dolphins?
Person B: Go search engine it.
Person A: What?
Person B: Search Google.
What makes more sense:
Person A: Do you know where to find information about dolphins?
Person B: Go search for it.
OR
Person B: Go search google for it.
And in terms of wikipedia:
Person A: Do you know anything about dolphins?
Person B: Go check wiki
What it should be:
Person A: Do you know anything about dolphins?
Person B: Go look it up
OR
Person B: Go check wikipedia
Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. For example, the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best known wikis.
Just like google is synonymous with searching, the wikipedia (wiki) happens to be the easiest and one of the most well known, available to anyone types of sources for fairly accurate information.
Also, directly to the point of my original response. If you type "Wiki [TOPIC]" into google and mash the enter key, about 99% of the time, a wikipedia article comes up. I think it has earned the right to be called wiki for short. If you just type "Wiki" into google and hit enter, the top 3 results are wikipedia. Until something bigger comes along, i will call it wiki when referring to it since pretty much no one misunderstands the meaning. :)
