This is possibly the longest distance between episodes of any anime I've ever watched. Each time a new one was released I'd re-watch the others :P

I quite enjoyed it. This could easily dethrone Elfen Lied as being the most violent modern anime, although only in scale not duration. The bloody climax is amazing, however, and the take on hero masochism awesome. I also love the modern take on Shinto lore. It's a short OVA, so you have nothing to lose here. Definitely one of my favorites :)

Long time between releases? Yeah, Hellsing OVAs do that too, we're finally up to #4, and they're quite fun if a bit mindless :)

Meh, the OVAs are OK to watch, but I prefer the personalities in the series. I've only watched the first couple, however.

Do the OVAs extend beyond the series? Because the removal of Schrodinger irks me.

I think so, haven't looked too closely into it. I *love* the 3rd OVA .. there's a scene where Alucard says 'Open Sesame' .. it's hilarious.

OVA 1 = Teh Suck
OVA 2 = Pretty Decent
OVA 3 = Occasionally Awesome
OVA 4 = Merely OK

So yeah, the quality is very uneven. Best animation is OVA 2 and 3. 1's animation is terrible, and 4 is sort of mediocre.

I like the Ultimate OVA's better than the 13-ep series... just didn't click with me... Not to mention that the Ultimate OVA's are actually following the manga 75+% of the time...
