This week:
A few of you may have seen movie previews for the upcoming 2008 movie staring (may he live forever) Robert Downey Jr. I'll try to cover the traditional iron-man as much as I can but this will be a good pre-read before the May 2nd movie.
Brief prologue from ComicVine:
Quote:
After his parents were tragically killed in a car accident, Tony inherited Stark Industries, an unparalleled mega-corporation, at the age of 21. One of his first projects as the new CEO was to have the faulty break system in his parents car which led to their accident redesigned in order to prevent further incidents and save lives.
During the Vietnam War (later retconned as the Gulf War, then later still as the war in Afghanistan), Stark was at one of his munitions plants testing new technology for the military when he was injured by an explosion that lodged shrapnel near his heart. Tony was then captured by a local warlord and forced under threat of death to create a doomsday weapon for him with another captive, the famed Nobel award-winning physicist, Yin Sen. The shrapnel was working its way towards Stark's heart and slowly killing him, but he and the physicist created an iron suit in secret that would save Tony's life. The suit contained and iron chest plate with magnetic fields that halted the shrapnel in its place. Yin Sen then created a diversion, sacrificing himself so that Stark could put on the power armor in time and escape captivity. In the suit, Stark took on the warlord and his men and avenged Yin Sen's death, thus Iron Man was born.

When he got back home, he believed that there was a reason he didn't die, and that even though he was spared... his time was limited as there was no safe way to remove the sharpnell and it would eventually kill him. He became obsessive in his fight to preserve himself and live life to it's fullest. He spent days and days improving the suit, buying time, and protecting others.
He took up heavy alcohol and later became addicted to it and a lifestyle that consisted of technology, sex, and booze. What set him apart was that in the entire series, the antagonist was always his addictions and obsessions. He was hardly sober, often disconnected, used his fame and money for endless one-night stands and left room for nothing else.
He later gave up justice and the pipe-dream of crime-fighting, as there was no time between the alcohol and hookers for it. That and the profit margins were often dismal. He really didn't feel any better saving lives and figured if they applied themselves like himself and 'evolved' a bit, they might not need protecting.
He later was found out to have engineered the marvel Civil War that pitted heroes against heroes and ended up killing Captain America himself. When confronted as to why he started the war he described how the economy worked and how it was just for profit.
(now for the movie):
Tony Stark is to be played Robert Downey Jr. A perfect cast if I've ever seen one. An addict playing an addict.
The newest trailer aired during the SuperBowl and can be found here:

The other trailer (which I like A LOT) can be found here:

I kept this one short and left out most the exciting stuff, but as I look more at the trailers, a lot of stuff they took straight out of the books and well... I don't want to accidentally give away the ending.
Look, I don't think movies need to be accurate or realistic or anything. I just want them to exist in the same general ballpark--no, continent--of physics I live in.
up up and away!
