Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:
*117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
*84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year
*71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
*29 have been accused of spousal abuse
*21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
*19 have been accused of writing bad checks
*14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
*8 have been arrested for shoplifting
*7 have been arrested for fraud
*3 have done time for assault
Can you guess which organization this is? Give up yet?
It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.
The same group that crank out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.

Although it's a vast generalization, I presume most good-aligned people spend their time toward personal gain. Most paths toward wealth do not involve gaining any actual power.
It takes a really special kind of good to be drawn to power to benefit people as a whole. I would suggest a great number of those who desire power would not be considered "good".
I don't really have a point here other than to say I don't think it's surprising that an organization that holds real, tangible power is corrupt. Most governments, I'm afraid, are probably as corrupt as ours is. *shrug*
You are almost never going to have everyone agree with your decisions when you hold some form of decision making power over a large group of people. The problem with this is that most of the decisions will negatively effect a large segment of the population in one way or another. Our electorates want to maintain their position in office so they also need to cater to public opinion, which we all know can be quite irrational. Its hard to defend yourself, maintain your position, and make the hard choices at the same time.
Its a game of chess and economics. Often those with good intentions can easily start to become lost in the war, their own opinions and interests adding to the chaos and confusion. I often question whether or not i blame them sometimes since im pretty certain that the game is dirty regardless of approach, someone will get hurt no matter how you play the game. Politics brings out true nature of the human condition i think. Ultimately we learn that we are self serving and greedy. But i suppose you cant always choose both sides of the coin, hard decisions will always fall to someone.
Im not going to defend the government or politicians i think some of the things they do crosses lines that should have never even have been imagined, but its not very often that i can say with absolute certainty that some of the decisions they make are wrong given the circumstances they are made under. The truth is that the average person has no clue about such things, relying on what the media has constructed for their information when making opinions. Often times however theres no other way to 'know' anything at all.
I think most people like to idealize their government as being made up of savvy politicians playing an intricate game of chess. I doubt this is the case.
I really don't think it's a good idea in general to give power to those who seek it. Especially not to those who spend their life trying to gain it.
